HTC Hero

HTC Hero steps out of original Goggle Android format with a new feature, Sense UI.

The Google Android platform was conceived as a good way for manufacturers and operators to deploy devices thanks to it being open source and easily customizable. So far, the two products out on the market, the HTC Dream and Magic, stay pretty much faithful to the original Android experience. But that's not the case with the recently announced HTC Hero. The Taiwan-based manufacturer has equipped this new smartphone with its Sense UI, no doubt to make sure it doesn't get labeled as just another Android phone.

Upside

The digital clock on the Hero looks a lot like what's found on HTC's TouchFlo 3D phones.
From what we can see, much effort has been made to improve the default Android interface through its Sense UI. For starters, the Home page spans many more pages than the default three. HTC has created a host of widgets that allow you to get to items such as contacts, settings and information like weather updates at a glance. Many of these look very similar to what's already found on the company's TouchFlo software for Windows Mobile, though on the Hero it's much more customizable because of the flexibility of widgets. Just pick the ones you like, and ditch those that you don't.

The phone's contacts app has also been greatly modified so each contact has a tabbed interface. Instead of merely getting access to a friend's details such as phone number and address, you can also see your email and text interactions with your pal without having to launch the separate messaging app. In addition, social-networking services are integrated so you can even see Facebook status updates. This has already been implemented in the latest version of TouchFlo 3D in the Touch Diamond2 and Pro2 Windows Mobile devices and we're happy to see it in an Android phone. Check out HTC's video below for more on its Sense UI.

Andriod would make it a great Smart phone OS platform as it's open source so I think we can expect a lot more cool applications. My next phone would be an Android (looking at Dream actually since the physical keyboard is a features that I really need due to the fact of my gigantic fingers). Just hope that there'll be a sense UI up for download on the Dream.

Just curious, what's actually so cool about iPhone anyway. I've been an apple die hard fan (since the macintosh 128, if you actually know what it is). But iPhone, come on mate!!! copy and paste, MMS, Bluetooth Streaming, video recording. Which smart phone in this 2009 that actually can't do that? I think only the iPhone on the 2.0 version that can't seem to handle it. And please iPhone in Singapore is pretty much a rip off by Singtel and Apple, NO Visual voicemail? come on, that's the selling point for iPhone).

Give other OS a chance and stop being a bimbo by letting apple selling us a 2000 features of the phone and mark it a "NEW FEATURES".

Time to catch up with the news my friend. iPhone OS V3 supports mms, copy & Paste, Video Bluetooth tethering etc - I think it is good to see android coming along but it has a lot of catch up to do still. Visual voice mail would be a nice to have but the great strength of iPhone is OSX mobile me and the mass of applications available already. Anyway you look at it iPhone still has the lead without contest at the moment and I doubt they are going to sit on their hands on this one.

:-) hehe I think some people take this stuff a little too seriously. It's not that serious guys. Like what you like and use the hand phone you wanna use! Personally I prefer iPhone's OS to Android or Windows Mobile.

Have you ever heard the phrase "Jack of all trades, master of none" ? Well, the phrase is used to describe a person that is competent in many skills but is not amazingly great in any particular skill. That is how I would describe Android and Windows Mobile phones -- they have a lot of functions but they don't master any of those functions. Android and Windows Mobile phones do not excel at web browsing; do not excel at user interface; do not excel at being a music player; do not excel at the touch screen experience... and the list goes on. The iPhone 3G [S] is truly the master of those functions and many others, making it the better phone.

It's just my opinion. I don't need to insult anyone or put anyone down. :-)

HTC is usually available here through T-Mobile or Vodafone own labelled devices... I had a lot of HTC stuff such as the MDAs at T-Mobile, while friends had the Voda equivalents... good stuff and usually a much better built quality than any blackberry...

To all the early uptakers: enjoy the new Hero experience. I've been delighted with the Magic and will search for uploadable android apps that can bring the innovations from Hero to my phone... eventually an upgrade! There's much more originality than an iphone with android!

cheers from Melbourne!
