Would LG's new watch phone be the hottest tech accessory for 2009?
We first clapped eyes on the LG Watch Phone GD910 at January's Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas. Unfortunately, it was a see-no-touch affair as LG demoed its wrist phone capabilities. Six months later and the Korean chaebol appears to have loosened its death grip on this elusive timepiece (actually we had to wrest it out of the hands of the product manager). As a result, we managed to get some real hands-on time with it at the recently concluded CommunicAsia tradeshow.
Having reviewed the LG Prade Link Bluetooth watch back in January, our experience with the Watch Phone GD910 felt familiar due to its stylish design. In reality, these are two very different gadgets. Aside from the GD910's ability to make voice and video calls, the display is now larger measuring at 1.43 inches and portrait-oriented. This is a capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 128 x 160 pixels and 260k colors. We found the interface generally snappy and we could swipe left or right to get to the four different pages of the menu. These included onscreen buttons to make voice/video calls, Contacts, Messaging, Utilities, Settings menu, MP3 music player and call log. Swiping up or down cycled through various themes for the clock face. It also support voice commands though we didn't get to try that out.
